Privacy & cookies
This site collects almost nothing, and the reason is not restraint. There was never a point at which collecting anything would have made it work better.
The short version. No cookies. No analytics. No tracking pixels, no advertising scripts, no embedded players, no fonts or libraries loaded from anyone else’s server. The enquiry form does not send anything to us — it opens a draft in your own mail app, and nothing leaves your machine until you decide to press send.
What this site stores in your browser
One thing. When you turn the ambient rain on for the first time, a small note appears telling you where the off switch is. So that it only ever appears once, the site writes a single value — nr-rain-seen, set to 1 — to your browser’s local storage.
It never leaves your browser, it is not readable by us or by anyone else, and it contains nothing about you. Clearing site data for this domain removes it, and the note simply appears again next time.
What our host records
The site is served by Cloudflare. Like every web server, theirs keeps a short operational record of requests: the IP address the request came from, the time, the page or file asked for, and the browser’s user-agent string. That is what makes it possible to deliver the page and to recognise an attack.
We do not query those logs to study visitors, we do not combine them with anything else, and nothing in them is used to build a profile, target advertising, or follow you to another site. Cloudflare’s own handling of that data is governed by its privacy terms.
The enquiry form
It is not a form in the usual sense. Nothing is posted to a server. When you press the button, the browser assembles what you typed into a message and hands it to whatever mail application you use. You can read it, change it, or close it without sending. If you never press send in your own mail app, we never receive it, and no copy of it exists anywhere but on your machine.
If you do get in touch
Then we have your email, and whatever you chose to put in it — typically a name, a company, a rough size, and a description of the problem. We use it to reply and to work out whether we are the right people for the job. Nothing more.
If the conversation becomes an engagement, that correspondence becomes part of the project record and is kept for as long as our business records require. If it does not, we keep the thread while it might still be useful and delete it when it stops being so. You can ask us to delete it sooner, and we will, unless we are legally required to keep it.
What we do not do
- Sell, rent, or trade your information. There is no circumstance in which this changes.
- Add you to a mailing list because you once sent us a question.
- Share what you tell us with another client, a vendor, or a partner, except where we need a named subcontractor to deliver work you have engaged us for — and then only what that work requires.
Your rights
Canadian federal privacy law (PIPEDA) and British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act give you the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected if it is wrong, and to withdraw consent for us to keep it. Write to hello@northrain.ca and we will answer within thirty days. There is no charge.
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled a request, you can take it to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that matters — if the site ever starts using analytics, for instance — the date at the top will change and the section describing it will say plainly what is now being collected.
